Interview with George Caroll

George Caroll is an internationally acclaimed Hollywood hairstylist, salon owner, award winning beauty product designer, industry consultant, beauty columnist and member of the Screen Actors Guild.

Throughout his career, George has been on the leading edge of our beauty profession having introduced (wash and wear unisex hair styles, heat styling tools and professional retail hair care products in the 70's). His web site (georgecaroll.com)  was one of the first internet sites featuring Hollywood hair style beauty secrets. When not globe trotting to promote "American Beauty Culture" George can be found at his hair styling studio in Toluca Lake, just minutes from Universal and Warner Brothers Studio's.

What made you choose Cosmetology as a career?

A close high school friend was teaching hairdressing at a beauty college in North Hollywood and suggest I look into hair styling as a career. The minute that I walked into the school I knew this was for me as it complemented my artistic background. I've always looked at (hair cutting-shaping-styling-coloring) as a "living art form".

Who influenced your career?
George Master Hollywood hair stylist responsible for Marilyn Monroe's sexy hair styles. Also hair shaping and blow dry styling from Jay Seebring, the barber stylist to the stars and creator of the "Dry Look" for men. Over the 40 plus years I've been influenced by many creative beauty industry artists, Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell, Joe Oliveri and stylists from around the world. We all stand on one another's shoulders that's how each of us and our noble profession evolves.

What stars have you styled ?

With a salon located in Toluca Lake around the corner from Warner Brothers and Universal studio's you can imagine I've had the opportunity to work with producers, directors and  many actors and actresses over the years. Many are featured on my salon web site (Movie Stars Hair Styling Beauty Secrets) with styling tips, beauty innovations and a few giggles. www.georgecaroll.com

What can you share with us about operating a salon?

Hair styles will come in and out of fashion over the course of your career. In order to say in business you must keep up with the latest style trends but also remember that not everyone is a Fashionista. Never forget that each person is unique and so is their hair. Make every salon visit a personal hair styling experience. Presentation and follow up is Everything.

What are the major changes you've seen over your career?

I would say: unisex" hair styles, blow dry hair cut styles, thermal controlled hair styling tools, protein hair care products, salon retailing, advanced hair color techniques and salon computer programs. Perhaps the most outstanding change has been the birth of the Internet making it possible to promote your salon locally and share styling technique with like minded beauty professional around the world.

What are the achievements you're most proud of?

Designing the "Men's Hair Styles" for Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek television series. And heading up the first every National Style-A-Thon for the Danny Thomas St Jude's Children’s Research Hospital. Together with hair stylist's across America we raised over a million dollars to help fight children's cancer.

And my Hair Flex Styling Brush. Its the "world's most versatile hair brush" . It combines three of the most popular styling brushes in one, a  (paddle brush, shaping brush and semi-round brush with a built-in comb) for shaping , finishing and blow dry styling. One styling brush does it all.

What is the best professional advice you've been given?

My beauty school teacher told me to always remain a student of the art. This way there will always be room for improvement and something to shoot for everyday. Its what you learn after you think you know it all that will keep your professional life challenging, interesting and enjoyable.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside the salon?
Creative Photo Art has been a life long avocation. My photo-art images feature all aspects of life around me. I also share my professional styling techniques and experience with students by donating time to local beauty schools and writing beauty blogs and news letters.

Frankie Avalon / Star Hair Style

Drawing inspiration from the hair styles of the stars and celebrities has become national past time. One classic star hair style for men that has stood the test of time is one time teen heart-throb and "Patron Saint" of beauty school drop outs, Frankie Avalon.  His matinee idol good looks, charm and hair style is totally swoon-worthy. Frankie's shaped to fit style and debonair persona, has stolen the hearts of women around the world for years.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:  Do you get the feeling your graying hair and out of date hair styles is making you look passé? Before you throw in the towel take a styling lesson from Frankie Avalon and watch  heads turn when you stroll into work looking ten years younger in a stylish grow-up way. For those looking for a no fuzz style this finger combed styles almost styles itself. To get the look, let’s take it one step at a time; starting with a style cut and shaping.
LET’S SHAPE IT: To get the look, start with a full contoured silhouette with tapered sides and neckline stylishly over the collar. With a few adjustments (tweaks) as it grows its easy to find the ideal length and shape for your new style.

LET’S STYLE IT:
To jump start your style, start with a dab of shaping spray
or use nothing at all. Just towel dry and comb in place or a quick tousle with a blow dryer and styling brush is all it takes. To put your "wild side" in play, when dry, add a dab of hair polish for shine and you’ve got the look.
NOW, LET’S COLOR IT:
Actors and entertainers like Frankie Avalon color their hair to look younger so coloring your hair should be no big deal. For a realistic look select a shade closest to your hair’s natural hair color and leave a little gray around the temples for a distinguished effect. To keep the gray at bay plan on having it cut and colored every 6 weeks. This extra step will set you back a few bucks but is well worth the time and expense for a stylish youthful look and all the attention you’ll get.

Frankie Avalon's classic style cut will put you back in the game looking years younger in a stylish grown up way. The short full contoured silhouette looks perfect from all points of view and puts a receding hairline stylishly under cover. Your new hair color looks so "au natural" it will have some wondering "does he or doesn't he"?  So don’t be surprised when you stroll into work looking dapper and feeling years younger when you hear the ladies saying, "By George" your hair looks great.

Jeff Bridges Star Hair Style

Drawing inspiration from the hair styles of our favorite stars and celebrities has become national past time. One popular star hair style is the multi talented Jeff Bridges also known to his fans as The Dude. His full long wavy hair style with stylish goatee and over the top persona is irresistible to women into the “wild thing” and quite the catch for those that go for the creative types.

TO GET THE LOOK: If you’re a flirtatious dude like Jeff bridges and have been looking for a hair style to stop women dead in their tracks, take a styling lesson from "The Dude" and watch heads turn when show up looking laid-back and oh so cool. Be forewarned, this “eye catching” style is a Babe Magnet. To get the look, let’s take it one step at a time; starting with a style cut and shaping.

LET’S SHAPE IT: To get the look start with a layered shoulder shape with swept back sides and length stylishly over the collar. This head turning style let’s the ladies know you’re the type of Dude that sets his own standard for style. With a few adjustments (trims) as it grows out you can easily find the ideal length and shape for your personal style.

LET’S STYLE IT:  Start with a dab of shaping gel or gel mousse or nothing at all. Just run either through damp hair and comb in place to dry au natural, or give it a quick once over with a blow dryer to relax the waves or give it a wind blown look. To turn up the shine and give it a natural look when dry, add a little-dab of styling cream or Bling hair polish through the top and sides and you’ve got the Dude's Star Style

LET’S ADD WHISKER’S & SIDEBURNS: Nothing can reshape a face or add a dramatic look like facial hair. Sideburns for example can be full, close, long, short or narrow. This simple addition can make large ears appear smaller or a narrow face wider. A shapely goatee adds width to a pointed chin, covers a double chin and definitely adds a stylish or artsy look. Because facial hair grows quickly you can easily find the ideal length for your face shape as it grows. Include close narrow mid length sideburns, shapely mustache and long goatee and you’ve got "The Dudes Look”.

THE DUDE STYLE CUT  has everything to let the ladies know you’re the type of dude that sets his own standard for style. The long shapely swept-back shoulder length style cut fits comfortably under a base ball cap and artsy goatee pushes the style bar over the top. The babes are sure to find your cool laid back persona and Zen Pick-Up lines irresistible. So be prepared to take names, email addresses and cell phone numbers the first time you show up to the party with The Dude's Hair Style.

Star Hair Style / Donald Trump

Drawing inspiration from the hair style trends of our favorite stars and celebrities has become a national past time. One such celebrity hair style is that of International property developer and television star Donald Trump. His trade mark comb-over hair style and techno-color hair” is a tonsorial work of art.

TO GET THE LOOK: Are you watching your hairline fade and feel that there’s nothing you can do about it, short of a hair transplant? Before you give up, take a styling lesson from Donald Trump’s and put your base ball cap away. To get the look, let’s take it one step at a time; starting with a style cut and shaping.

LET’S SHAPE IT: To cover this much landscape will require a building permit and full set of architectural hair styling plans. To get the look, start with a long layered silhouette and low slung side part combed over the crown to put the blank spot stylishly under cover. The sides and front are long and tapered with a few “love locks” to cover the hairline. With a few adjustments (tweaks) as it grows you can easily find the ideal length and shape for your style.

LET’S STYLE IT:  To get all 500 hairs flying in formation start with a dab of shaping gel or gel mousse to thicken and add style support. Just run either through damp hair and give it a quick blast with a blow dryer for a full look. After part and swoop the hair across the top, flipped the front back and push it forward to cover the receding hairline. To hold this tonsorial master piece in place finish with extra hold special FX hairspray and you’re good to go.

NOW, LET’S COLOR IT:   If your hair color is fading away and graying around the temples like Donald Trump’s a light golden brown tint will wash the gray away and give the thin hair a thicker look. After, a clear glaze seals-in the color and turns up the shine. To prevent the color from fading prematurely a light brown color enhancing shampoo is used weekly. To keep it up the new growth is re-tinted once a month. This will cost a few extra bucks but is well worth time and expense for a youthful look.

Now that you have your fading hairline covered with a few “love locks” you can put your base ball cap away. The low side part combed over the crown puts the blank spot stylishly under cover. The full look with neckline over the collar gives you a sporty look. Trading in your graying hair for a light natural brown hue defines the shape and washed the gray away for a youthful look. Heads will turn and your pals will wonder “What’s Up Dude” when they see the babe's making a fuss over you and your Donald Trump comb-over do’.
